The holidays are notoriously filled with sweet treats and savory delights. When January rolls around, we all make our way back into the gym and into a new fitness routine to undo those rolls that we added over the last few months. As a person with diabetes, however, it’s about more than a little gained weight and a bigger pant size. It’s about undoing the hard work accomplished to make positive changes for overall health.
But, there are tricks to stay on track that don’t leave one feeling deprived during the holiday season!
The Potluck: Who wants to be that person sitting in their office and away from the fun? The temptations that a potluck brings can be a challenge. No need to be anti-social. Bring something along that aligns! Join in the fun while still staying on track!
Saying No: Learn the art of saying “no thank you”: It’s ok to politely decline. No explanation needed. If asked for one, the simple response is “I appreciate the offer, maybe next time”, then change the subject!
Eat ahead of time: If the party isn’t a sit-down meal, eating before can prevent over-indulging on some of the food that prevents good sugar control.
Pair it with protein: If the carbs are flowing, pick out the protein and load up! Proteins keep you full longer and also help keep sugars more balanced during digestion.
Pick out meals ahead: There is a lot of eating out during this time of year. Looking at the menu ahead of time and deciding before can help with healthier choices!
Balance it out: Overindulged? Add an extra workout. Working out results in more balanced sugars as the body burns the excess sugar
Treat but don’t cheat: It’s not about perfection. Indulging from time to time can help keep the feeling of normalcy and inclusion. But don’t overdo it. A bad day doesn’t undo a healthy lifestyle. Keep climbing that mountain!
Stay on Track!
Remember YOUR reasons for choosing a healthier path and focus on that this upcoming season! Don’t let the holidays keep you from winning the battle within! Happy Holidays from your Diabetes Battle Buddy!
